Robotic Rover, MARCbot

Marty Kress, executive director of the Von Braun Center for Science and Innovation (VCSI), showcases his robot, “Marcbot IV-N,” at the Huntsville Center for Technology.

He explains that the collaboration began two years ago in Huntsville, Alabama, with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the Army Robotic Systems Joint Project Office, Schafer Corporation, and AGT. The goal for the robot was to detect IEDs within a range of 1,000 meters to help better protect warfighters. It took only six weeks for a prototype to be on the table and the robot became a huge success.

The COL that was in charge of this program emphasized that every robot they could put on the ground in Iraq would help bring one more soldier home for Christmas. Marty also discusses that this is the same business model that was used to develop the Fast, Affordable Science and Technology Satellite, FASTSAT. The key to the model is to turn things around quickly and cheaply.
